“We trialled the CD with 10 students
in the Certificate IV in Health (Nursing) in semester 2, 2002. In
previous years we have launched straight into teaching the module
‘Medication management', which includes a large component of drug
calculations, without any preparation. In the past, students have
struggled with the basic concepts of dealing with fractions and
decimals. The trial enabled students to refresh their basic maths
skills, or in some cases learn basic maths before studying ‘Medication
Management'.
The CD enabled students to study at
their own pace, in their own home (without the embarrassment of being
watched by their teacher or other students), and to access me for
support when and if they needed it. They all coped brilliantly. When it
came time for them to study drug calculations it took them half the
time. They quickly grasped concepts that required the use of basic
calculations.
The group were excited about the
method of assessment afforded by the CD, and that they had many
opportunities to re-sit the final assessment if they needed to. The CD
enabled students to skip over topics that they felt familiar with and
focus on topics that were new to them.
One student said “This is so cool…I
wish we could study our whole course on CD…””

“The CD uses sound educational
principles in that it has inbuilt self selection of complexity of level
so that the student can begin at the appropriate level. It is
comprehensive in content and extremely user friendly in design. In
addition, the drug calculations section can be used over and over again
as revision prior to mandatory annual medication audits, an excellent
self appraisal tool.”

“I have found that the students who
have used the CD Rom have less anxiety when asked to complete their
final assessment. The CD Rom is great for practice. With the random
process in which questions are offered, the students have to be ready
for all types of questions and be able to apply their knowledge to the
questions as they appear. Also, if a student finds that they are
struggling in one particular area then they can just select questions
in this area until they are more familiar, for example the metric
system and conversions. The students can also jump back to the theory
on the particular area with the press of a button, couldn't be
simpler.”
Carolyn Byrne (Nurse Educator)

“The Nursing Calculations CD has
proven to be a very successful teaching and testing tool for our
enrolled nursing students. The students' confidence and skills in
applying percentages, ratios, decimals and fractions to nursing
problems and situations has improved significantly since moving from
the workbook to the CD. It also introduces to using a computer which
meets one of their Learning Outcomes.”
Deb Beath
Coordinator Certificate IV in Health (Nursing)

“This has got to be the best thing
ever. I should have had it way before the course started.”
Nursing student, QLD
“The Nursing Calculations CD-Rom has
been highly successful in developing my skills and confidence in maths
and using a computer.”
Nursing student, SA
“I would recommend this CD to other
nursing students, as it bridges the gap from rudimentary maths skills
to Gatford and Anderson's “Nursing calculations”. Wouldn't have known
what to do without it. It is an absolutely essential tool.”
Nursing student, SA
“Thank you so much for developing
this excellent program!!”
Nursing student, SA
“My favourite part of the CD was the
user friendly format and instructions to see where I went wrong. They
explained things in a simplistic, non-esoteric manner.”
Nursing student, SA
“I certainly will use the CD in the
future to revise drug calculations and my children will use it for
basic skills building throughout their schooling.”
Nursing student, SA
